We are Stonewood Design.
We are an award-winning architectural practice,
with offices in Bath and London.
We received a RIBA National Award, for our project
Myrtle Cottage Garden Studio in 2015. This award celebrates architecture of the very highest level. The project demonstrates a sensitive approach to a beautiful landscape setting.
We were named BD Small Project Architect of the Year 2016.
In 2019 we received a RIBA National Award for Kingswood Preparatory School and Nursery as well as a RIBA South West Project Architect of the Year Award.
Our workload is diverse, but is connected by our interest in
Craft and Context.
We work by listening.
Having grown out of a well-established construction company,
our work is founded in materials and building.
We enjoy how things are put together and care about the detail.

” Stonewood Design are an award-winning practice who are punching well above their weight in project size and ambition via its own organic process.
Even its beginnings as a practice came about not consciously, but the product of founders Nicola du Pisanie’s and partner Matt Vaudin’s wish to balance work and family life. Adam Chambers joined to give the practice critical mass; and while all came out of Stirling Prize- winning firm Feilden Clegg Bradley, they chose to work with and under the same roof as a local firm of bespoke contractors, Stonewood Builders, in a small barn in the idyllic Cotswold village of Castle Combe. The firm’s appellation, interestingly, didn’t stem from the usual surname convention, nor from their desire to use the acronyms that seem all the rage for architects, but merely from the contingency of the situation - Stonewood Design.
From that office projects burgeoned; from small but highly crafted home extensions, to whole new residences. Stonewood are recipients of the profession’s RIBA awards, recognising design quality. Their Myrtle Cottage Studio, a project of great craft and contextual awareness, received not only this, but national air time on £100K House. Their Pod Gallery set in an existing listed home, shows real skill in creating a contemporary insertion into a historical building in an almost seamless way. Both were petri dishes for much more ambitious work- their competition-winning and recently opened Kingswood School project in Bath, a sensitive riverside development, Timber:Mill:Box, in the Box Valley and a new Garden Museum in Somerset, now on site, at a scale that belies the size of the firm that designed it. It’s as if their rural isolation has allowed them to develop
a singular confidence and identity for themselves.
I’m intrigued as to how this will develop with a London satellite office in addition to their bucolic home in Corsham. The firm now numbers twenty and is a healthy balance of youth and experience, gender and character. It’s part of the reason it sits so comfortably in its skin; its ability to be engaged with clients whilst constantly stimulated in itself. But most importantly, by being able to work together with and coax the very best from the builders and craftsmen charged with realising their ideas. As a recipe for success, it’s this last thought that endures: for it proves they have never lost touch with their own roots:
