University College Falmouth

We were shortlisted alongside LT Studios Landscape Architects, to bid for the design of a new “Heart Space” at the Tremough Campus, at University College Falmouth.

As an integrated design team we thoroughly enjoyed understanding the campus and the vision in more detail, approaching the Heart Space creatively, and imagining how we might interface with the chosen artist team, to create something truly extraordinary for the Tremough Campus.

We combined as a team to work together in one studio, often gathering around a table and throwing ideas

into the pot, collecting inspiring images and words, and exploring various media that convey our emerging concepts throughout this energising process.

The Heart Space shall become the social focal point for the Tremough Campus for people to gather and meet but also where people can express themselves through, amongst other things incidental performing art, sculpture making or to watch outdoor film. It shall be flexible to meet the diverse needs of the College.

Our initial response was to demonstrate this through the medium of textile and fabric and weaving. This is how we communicated a clear yet poetic narrative that arrives at a coherent solution and creates a Heart Space which is an exciting place to be, is inclusive, meets the needs of all users and has a lively character, a buzz about it.

We have explored a micro version of the process of collaborating with an artist. We worked with a local colour artist to communicate our layered approach through colour, form and fabric. We briefed the artist on our thoughts regarding the masterplan and our concepts, and then allowed her to interpret this. This was a learning process for us, and demonstrated how our team could successfully work with an artist.
